Snow, Sleet, Freezing Rain: MI Winter Storm

Some areas across southeastern Michigan will see greater snowfall amounts, while other areas can see higher ice totals, forecasters said.

SOUTHEAST MICHIGAN — A winter storm can bring a bit of everything to southeastern Michigan Wednesday, but forecasters are primarily concerned with ice, according to the National Weather Service.

Snow will start falling across southeastern Michigan during sunset Wednesday as cold temperatures hang on in the region, according to national forecasters.

The snow will then rapidly switch to sleet and freezing rain during the nighttime hours and overnight into Thursday morning as warmer air moves into the region, according to national forecasters.

Areas north of Interstate 69 should see greater snow totals, while areas between Interstate 69 and Interstate 96 can see sleet and freezing rain cut into snow totals, according to national forecasters.

Forecasters warned areas south of Interstate 696 can see ice accumulations up to a tenth of an inch, with even higher amounts for areas farther south toward the Ohio border.

Forecasters also warned the ice can lead to a messy Thursday morning commute, along with isolated power outages across the area.

Any lingering remnants from the storm should move out of the southeastern Michigan area by late Thursday morning when highs rapidly push toward 40 degrees in the region, according to national forecasters.

Friday across southeastern Michigan will remain dry with cooler temperatures before another wintry mix event could hit the area again this weekend, bringing more snow and rain, and possibly ice, according to national forecasters.
