Study: More People Are Leaving Michigan Than Moving To It

This new study shows the reason so many people said goodbye to the Mitten in 2018.

MICHIGAN — A new study shows that more people are moving out of Michigan than to the state. United Van Lines found that the Mitten is the 10th most moved from state in 2018. Why are people leaving? Jobs, mainly and then retirement, the figures suggest.

The National Movers Study tracks customers' state-to-state migration patterns and says Michigan is new to the top 10 list of moving out with 55 percent.

It’s not an uncommon phenomenon to move out of the Midwest, the study showed, as Michigan was joined by states like Ohio, which ranked sixth, Illinois, which ranked second, and Iowa, which ranked eighth.
