Two Michigan State Police officers were shot and injured while executing a search warrant and the suspect was killed.

BRANCH COUNTY, MI — Authorities have identified the suspect who was killed Wednesday after police say he opened fire on two Michigan State Police officers as they executed a search warrant.

The suspect was identified as David Kidney, 62, of Union City, Michigan. The shooting happened around 11:15 a.m. on Wednesday in rural Branch County.

Preliminary results from an autopsy showed that Kidney's cause of death was a single gunshot wound that was sustained while exchanging gunfire with troopers. Police did not say where Kidney was hit.

In a statement, police said that when the two officers announced their presence before entering the home, a suspect leveled a long gun at the officers. The officers were attempting to take cover when they were hit, police said.

Police say a detective sergeant was shot in the chest and a trooper received a grazing wound to the hand. The trooper, identified as Daniel Thayer, was also hit in the chest but that round was stopped by his ballistic vest, police said.
