These Are MI's Safest Cities, According To A New Report

Multiple metro Detroit cities are among the safest in Michigan, the new report says.

MICHIGAN — When choosing a place to raise a family or buy a house, many consider safety among the top priorities. A new report provides some statistics to support this.

SafeWise, a security product review platform, looked at crime statistics for communities in the state to compile its 11th annual Safest Cities report. A total of 183 towns in Michigan met the criteria to be considered for the ranking.

Michiganders who participated in the site's "State of Safety" survey are split in their perceptions of crime and safety in The Great Lake State.

Just over half (52 percent) report feeling safe daily, while half say they worry about their overall safety and security.

Roughly 15 percent of Michiganders reported having a personal experience with violent crime in the 8 months before the survey, up from 12 percent the previous year. The U.S. average is 14 percent.

Gun violence is a main concern among Michiganders, who are the fifth most likely state in the nation to experience it firsthand. Only respondents from Georgia, Louisiana, Kentucky and Maine encountered more gun violence.

Also, Michiganders who participated in the site's survey reported year-over-year increases in property crime (32 percent, up from 28 percent the year before), but decreases in package theft (36 percent, down from 39 percent the year before), SafeWise noted.

The report also looked at how residents protect their homes: Of those Michiganders surveyed, 43 percent said they have security cameras, 28 percent said they have guard dogs and 24 percent said they use a security system.

The "Safest Cities" rankings were compiled using FBI data on violent crime and property crime rates. Cities and jurisdictions across the country voluntarily report the information through the FBI Summary Reporting System and National Incident-Based Reporting System. The most recent FBI data was released in October 2024 and accounts for crimes reported in 2023. SafeWise also used population thresholds in its reporting, according to the company.
