Weapons Seized, Schools Close After Social Media Threat To Shoot Up MI School: Police

A man and his teenage son displayed a weapon in the video, according to police.

WOODLAND TOWNSHIP, MI — Officers seized weapons from an Eaton County home Tuesday night after a threatening social media video forced local schools to close down the next day, according to Michigan State Police.

The video depicted a weapon and showed a 40-year-old Holt man and his 17-year-old son from Sunfield, making "statements suggesting the student might take the weapon to school and cause harm to faculty," police said.

Lakewood Public Schools officials seen the video and immediately called law enforcement at 11 p.m. Tuesday, police said.

All schools in the district were closed Wednesday while officers searched the individual's house in the morning hours, police said.

Investigators haven't determined if the two intended to shoot up the school or if they just made a poor decision in creating the video, police said.

Officers did not arrest them, and they are cooperating with investigators, police said.

The Eaton County Prosecutor’s Office is reviewing the case, police said.

"Staging or sharing videos that show weapons or suggest harming others is dangerous and irresponsible. It puts people at risk and can lead to real-world injury, legal consequences, and permanent harm to your reputation," Michigan State Police Lt. Rene Gonzalez said.
