Weekend Planner: Fish Fry, Lasagna Bake-Off, Pet Food Drive and More

Lenten Fish Fry

  • What: During the season of Lent, followers are asked to abstain from meat on Fridays. Our Lady of La Salette offers fish or pasta dinner.
  • When: 5-7 p.m. Fridays through March 30
  • Where: Our Lady of La Salette school
  • Cost: $5 for macaroni & cheese dinner, $7 for 2-piece baked or fried cod, $8 for 3-piece baked or fried cod dinner

Hannan Lis to speak at Congregation Beth Shalom

  • What: Hannan Lis, who is originally from Haifa, Israel, will discuss the secrets behind Israel’s tech-based economy. 
  • When: noon Saturday
  • Where: Congregation Beth Shalom, 14601 W. Lincoln Rd., Oak Park
  • Cost: The event is free of charge, but reservations are requested. Call the synagogue office at (248) 547-7970.

Book Corner hosts local author

  • What: Local author Mary Minnock will discuss her book, The Way-Back Room: A Memoir of a Detroit Childhood.
  • When: 2 p.m. Saturday
  • Where: Berkley Book Corner, 2680 Coolidge Hwy.
  • Cost: free admission

Animal rescue adoption event, food drive

  • What: A special cat adoption event for New Beginnings Animal Rescue and food drive. Berkley Animal Clinic is offering free and discounted services to anyone who adopts a cat during the event. Anyone bringing a food donation will receive a coupon good toward $5 off services at Berkley Animal Clinic (one per family).
  • When: 3-6 p.m. Saturday.
  • Where: The Berkley Animal Clinic, 3996 W. 12 Mile Rd. 
  • Cost: Free and discounted services for pets 4 months and older include a gift certificate for a free exam (usually $65), which includes a comprehensive exam, distemper vaccine, fecal check, deworming and toe nail trim. Pets under 4 months of age will receive $35 off the clinic standard puppy/kitten visit package.

Lasagna Bake-Off to benefit Gilda's Club

  • What: You can submit your best lasagna recipe or just come for the delicious home cooking. To reserve your spot, call Sharon Transit at 248-577-0800.
  • When: 4-8 p.m. Sunday
  • Where: Mirepoix, the cooking school at Holiday Market
  • Cost: $60 per person, $100 per couple and $30 for children under 15. All proceeds will be donated to Gilda's Club.
