DCDS Honors 29 Senior Students At Scholar-Athlete Award Dinner

Detroit triathlete Terra Castro served as guest speaker for the evening

Detroit Country Day School (DCDS) recognized 29 students from the Class of 2018 for excellence in academics, athletics, character, and leadership during the annual Scholar-Athlete Award Dinner held at The Reserve in Birmingham, Mich. DCDS Headmaster Glen Shilling made the announcement.

This year, DCDS welcomed Terra Castro, a professional triathlete who, after an 11-year career, has returned to her roots in Detroit. Castro now manages her own gym, Detroit Body Garage, and along with her endurance company, Be Bold Crew, hosts pop up fitness classes throughout the city of Detroit, helping residents lead healthy lifestyles.

“The Scholar-Athlete award recognizes notable accomplishments of students in the areas of academics and athletics,” said Shilling. “Each student has successfully balanced a rigorous academic course schedule with the time and energy they dedicate to one or more of the school’s competitive athletic teams. The DCDS community is very proud of the hard work and accomplishments of these students who positively represent our school and community.”

The Scholar-Athlete Award Dinner is a DCDS tradition sponsored by the Blue & Gold Club, a parent volunteer organization that supports the athletic programs and physical education activities of DCDS students, and is dedicated to improving and enhancing student opportunities and facilities for these programs. The Scholar-Athlete Award was established in 1979 to bring public recognition to the scholar-athlete and those who exemplify the values of DCDS.

Each senior student who earned the Scholar-Athlete Award was nominated by a coach and was required to submit a resume highlighting academic and athletic honors, and a personal essay. The students also had to have earned at least two varsity letters in one or more sports and a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0. This year’s scholar-athletes were selected through a panel review of each candidate’s credentials and essay submission. The Scholar-Athlete Award recipients from the Class of 2018 include:
