OCHN September Recovery Month Celebration

OAKLAND COUNTY, MI (September 5, 2023) – In recognition of September being both
National Recovery and Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, Oakland Community Health
Network (OCHN) is joining nation-wide efforts in raising awareness of these two observances.
In 2022, approximately 49,449 people died by suicide in the U.S. This number is increased by
2.6 percent since 2021, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Suicide Prevention Awareness Month is intended to cultivate a community of understanding
and vigilance concerning this public health issue, while publicizing valuable resources for
suicide prevention. Anyone can experience suicidal thoughts and knowing the warning signs
can prevent suicide from occurring. Throughout September, OCHN is using its social media
sites and community connections to educate the public on available resources.
Additionally, OCHN is recognizing September as National Recovery Month. According to the
Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), in 2021,
approximately 24 million people were classified as having a substance use disorder. (SUD).
Recovery Month seeks to educate communities that substance use treatment and mental
health services are available.
