Police: This Phone Number is a Scam

Bloomfield Township authorities released a phone number they suspect is tied to a scam that threatens residents with an IRS lien.

The Bloomfield Township Police Department warned residents to beware of a phone number that appears tied to a new scam threatening residents with arrest because of tax problems.

The alert for 530-235-6505 followed a report on Aug. 27 by a resident in the 6000 Block of Idlewyle Road who said she received a suspicious phone call from a man with a heavy Indian accent claiming to be from the
IRS. The caller stated that she owed more than $11,000 and needed to pay immediately by purchasing a pre-paid debt card to avoid an arrest warrant, reports said.

The caller hung up as she continued to ask questions, reports said.

"Note that that any unsolicited calls that ask for you to purchase pre-paid debt cards to pay off a debt are more than likely a scam. Please take the time to verify what the caller is saying," stated the alert on the department's Facebook page.

Police said the phone number is linked to phone scams around the country.
