Brighton Senior Asks 'Why' No Financial Support from City

During public comments on Thursday night's Brighton City Council meeting, Brighton resident Pat Cook addressed the board with questions regarding the senior center and the city's lack of financial support for the city's seniors.

"So I would ask please for an explanation of why the city of Brighton has not, since 2008-09 budget year, contributed to the Brighton Senior Center," she asked.

Cook compared the services offered to the senior population by SELCRA and the senior center telling the board that in her opinion the senior center was "more overwhelming in the big picture of what they will do and can do."

Highlighting the fact that Brighton continues to give financial support to SELCRA and "turned over" a community center to the program, while the senior center receives "virtually nothing," Cook ended with the question of "why?"

"Speaking on behalf of a lof of our senior residents here that pay taxes, I'm hearing from them that they're very offended that Brighton city isn't paying anything for the senior center," Cook said.

Responding to her question, Mayor Jim Mussin explained that due to budget cuts, the council had made the decision to stop funding the senior center, "just like other things we stopped doing," and said there were "plenty of other cuts" that were also made during that time period.
