Garbage cans designed to look like ice cream cones? Sure-- that makes sense and seems like the perfect way to welcome customers to Jack's Custards and Cakes in downtown Brighton.
But how was such a functional decoration created and who is the mastermind behind such a fun idea?
The answer to that burning question, Brighton, is store owner Carol Samples, the family matriarch who helps run Jack's Custards and Cakes with her husband, daughter and passel of grandchildren.
"My grandma makes all the decorations in the store," granddaughter Lindsey Kemmerling said. "She spends a lot of time on them."
The design concept for the homemade decorations is simple, really, with a painted ball and insulation for the ice cream resting on top of a garbage for the cone, but where original the idea came from is a mystery and one Lindsey credits to her grandmother's creativity.
"She thought of the idea all on her own," the Brighton teen said. "She comes up with all kind of ideas."
From a homemade key game for the kids to altered photos of the grandkids hanging on the walls, Lindsey said her grandmother's creative touch is felt throughout the family-run shop.
And yes, Lindsey said with a smile, questions from customers regarding their trademark garbage cans is very common, but one Jack's employees never get tired to answering.
