Lansing Community College: LCC Celebrates Indigenous Peoples' Day

Lansing, Mich. – Lansing Community College celebrated Indigenous Peoples' Day with a tree dedication and land acknowledgement.

The LCC Board of Trustees resolved at its Sept. 20 board meeting, that the college will celebrate Indigenous Peoples' Day on the second Monday of every October, beginning Oct. 11, 2021.

The Board also adopted a resolution acknowledging that the area comprising LCC's campuses was originally inhabited by the Anishinaabeg – Three Fires Confederacy of Ojibwe, Odawa and Potawatomi peoples.

LCC Trustee Samantha Vaive read the land acknowledgement statement that was followed by a prayer, smudging, overview of Indigenous Peoples' Day, and a tree dedication ceremony.

"At Lansing Community College, we celebrate culture 365," said Chief Diversity Officer Tonya Bailey. "Today's dedication celebrated the original inhabitants of North America, the Native Americans. We were honored to recognize and celebrate the beautiful traditions and cultures of Indigenous People. This ceremony further demonstrates LCC's commitment to being an inclusive campus community."
