Man Dead After Standoff In Metro Detroit Meijer Parking Lot: Police

Officers were investigating a travel trailer that was owned by a man who had several warrants for his arrest, police said.

BRIGHTON, MI — A man was found dead Sunday inside a travel trailer at a Meijer parking lot in Brighton after a standoff with police, according to the Brighton City Police Department.

Police said officers began investigating a stolen U-Haul truck near a travel trailer that was parked in the store's parking lot on West Grand River Avenue near Interstate 96 at 2:30 p.m.

Officers tried speaking with the owner of the trailer, who had several warrants for his arrest, including a felony warrant involving a weapon, police said.

The man was also wanted in connection with the theft of the U-Haul truck, which was stolen out of Roseville, police said.

When no one inside the trailer responded to the officers, they began using a loudspeaker and eventually a woman came out of the trailer, police said.

Officers then began talking to the man inside the trailer by phone and tried to get the man to exit the trailer, police said.

After a roughly 30 minute conversation, the man's phone became disconnected with the officers, police said.

After several hours with no communication with the man, a SWAT team went inside the trailer at 7:20 p.m. and found the man dead, police said.

Police believe the man took his own life, but didn't release any further details. Officials did not release his name.

Police said there were no other injuries or shots fired by police or at police during the hours long standoff. There were also no children involved in the incident, police said.
