Parent Accidentally Drops Handgun Inside Metro Detroit School: Reports

Although school officials described the incident as a "sincere accident," the parent is facing charges, according to multiple reports.

PINCKNEY, MI — A Livingston County parent is facing charges after his holstered gun accidentally fell off his belt inside an elementary school while volunteering, according to multiple reports citing prosecutors.

The incident happened at Navigator Upper Elementary School in Pinckney on March 17, when the parent was engaging with students during indoor lunch recess in the gym, according to reports.

No one was hurt and the parent quickly took the gun back to his car, reports said.

Prosecutors did not reveal what charges the parent faces, but his next court date was scheduled for April 14, according to reports.

Pinckney Community Schools Superintendent Rick Todd and Navigator Principal Ruth Badalucco said in a letter the parent, whose name wasn't released, is a well-known and active volunteer.

Officials said the parent does possess a CPL (Concealed Pistol License), but forgot to leave his holstered gun in his vehicle before entering the school.

Even though officials described the incident as a "sincere accident," the district filed a police report and reminded parents that it is illegal to carry a concealed weapon into a school building, even if the owner has a CPL, without special permission, according to the letter.

"Although this parent is feeling extremely remorseful, embarrassed and responsible for what has happened, it does not negate the seriousness of this and the potential for something more serious to occur, which we are extremely grateful did not," officials said.

Officials determined there was no immediate threat to students and did not place the school in lockdown. In addition, officials said the students were composed and did not feel like they were in danger.

The district also barred the parent from volunteering in the district until further notice as the legal process plays out, officials said.
