Chelsea Businesses Go "Green" to Fight Against Underage Drinking

Chelsea businesses that sell alcohol are going green, but not in the traditional sense.

On Oct. 2, volunteers from the SRSLY Coalition visited 22 businesses in two hours in order to raise awareness of the penalties for adults who buy alcohol for minors.

Wearing their signature bright green shirts, the SRSLY members placed thousands of bright green stickers on cases of beer and wine coolers in stores, and asked restaurant bar and wait staff to wear the stickers for the evening. The stickers – also bright green – read, “It is illegal for anyone over 21 to purchase/provide alcohol to minors. Fines are up to $2,500 or 1 year in jail.”

Stickers also feature the SRSLY coalition’s website, www.srslychelsea.org.

SRSLY held the event prior to Chelsea High School’s homecoming weekend in order to deter parents from buying alcohol for their teens’ parties. The group has conducted nine successful Sticker Shock events in the last four years and continues to have great support from the Chelsea business community.

SRSLY is a community coalition dedicated to the prevention of destructive
behavior in Chelsea youth. The group was formed in 2008 in response to local data showing that teens in Chelsea are more likely to abuse drugs and alcohol than state and national averages.
