Chelsea Education Foundation Donates Books to Elementary Students

Three nationally-known authors will visit Chelsea on March 20.

Students in 20 classrooms across the Chelsea School District recently received a surprise donation of 340 books.

The books were provided by the Chelsea District Library, the Chelsea Education Foundation and the Michigan Council for the Arts and Cultural Affairs.

Students in grades 2, 4 and 6 will read a variety of titles in preparation for visits from three nationally-known authors during the city's fourth annual "Authors in Chelsea" event on March 20.

Authors in Chelsea is a day-long celebration of authors and illustrators, who are invited by the Chelsea District Library to give workshops in North Creek and South Meadows elementary schools, and Beach Middle School.

Dori Hillestad Butler, writer of the children’s mystery series, "The Buddy Files," and winner of the 2011 Edgar Award for Best Juvenile Mystery, will be visiting second-grade classrooms at North Creek.

Tim Smith, Michigan author of the popular "Buck Wilder" outdoors series, will visit South Meadows Elementary School.

Kenneth Oppel, an award-winning author of adventure/fantasy books for middle school students, including the popular trilogy "Silverwing," will be appearing at Beach Middle School.
