Chelsea High School Alumna Launches Katie K Designs

In Michigan's current economy, many people are shying away from starting a business. That’s not the case for Katie Klink, however, a graduate of Chelsea High School and founder of Katie K Designs, a graphic design company.

The editorial/graphic design company serves retailers and customers in western Washtenaw County and operates out of Klink's home in Chelsea.

Klink said the idea to open her business came in September, after searching for jobs in Michigan following her graduation from Saginaw Valley State University in 2011.

"I couldn't find a job anywhere," she said. "Companies wanted three years of experience and weren't willing to hire someone right out of college. Because I graduated debt free, I decided to focus all my time, energy, and money into starting my own business."

Katie K specializes in designing fliers, business cards, CD covers, banners, invitations, logos, menus, and other products.

While she acknowledges stiff competition from websites such as Vistaprint, which offer services at deeply discounted rates, Klink said she can provide unique products tailored to a specific businesses.

"When you go with a designer, you get a one of a kind design that no one else has," Klink said.

Klink said her interest in graphic design began in high school while interning with Colorbok Paper Products in Dexter.

"I spent all my free time with the designers and I've worked toward a career in the graphic design world ever since," she said.

She said she hopes to put her eye for design to work in her hometown, and has begun reaching out to local merchants.

"I've always loved Chelsea. I see logos from a business design standpoint and I know some local businesses could use a spruce up," Klink said.
