Chelsea Student Arrested for Threatening Teacher

A 16-year-old Chelsea School District student was arrested Friday for allegedly threatening a teacher.

According to a press release from the Jackson County Sheriff's Office, the student made a "very specific threat to a specific teacher in the district" on a social media website.

Sheriff's deputies arrested the student Friday morning at his home in Waterloo Township.

The student was first taken to Allegiance Health for a mental health evaluation.

Superintendent Andrew Ingall said the teacher was immediately notified of the threat, and neither teachers nor students were ever in any danger.

"We handle threats very seriously," he said. "Our initial response is to reach out to local law enforcement for support."

Ingall said the district contacted the Chelsea Police Department and the Jackson County Sheriff immediately after learning of the threat.

The arrest comes one week after the school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT. Law enforcement agencies have been put on high alert following threats of violence at nearly a dozen school districts in three counties across Southeast Michigan.

Several schools across Michigan decided to close Friday over concerns of violence. Superintendents in Washtenaw County decided not to close schools.
