Families Needing Holiday Assistance Can Apply to the Salvation Army This Week

The Washtenaw County Salvation Army is assisting families with food and gifts for the 2012 Christmas season.

The Salvation Army of Washtenaw County (TSA-WC) will host sign-ups for its 2012 Christmas assistance program Oct. 22-25.

Washtenaw County residents in need of assistance this Christmas can apply to receive a gift card to a local grocery store to purchase fresh foods. Families with children up to age 14 can also apply for toys from The Salvation Army community center toy shops.

Those requesting assistance can apply at The Salvation Army of Washtenaw County’s Ann Arbor or Ypsilanti community centers.

The Ann Arbor community center is located at 100 Arbana Drive. Families can apply from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 24 and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 25.

The Ypsilanti community center is located at 9 S. Park St. in Ypsilanti. Families can apply for assistance from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 23, or 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 24 and Oct. 25.

Residents are required to provide current identification for all household adults, proof of residence, and two items to show proof of dependents such as birth certificates or Social Security cards.

In 2011 The Salvation Army helped provide more than 12,200 meals and 17,300 nights of shelter to residents in Washtenaw County.

“We want to help ease our neighbors’ worries about having a good meal to eat and presents for their children this holiday season,” said Maj. John Williams. “We hope our Christmas assistance program helps alleviate additional pressures that coincide with the holiday season, so that our neighbors in need can focus on spending the holidays together.”
