Silver Maples, Center for Michigan Host Education Forum on Oct. 22

Silver Maples Retirement Community will host a community conversation about education at 7 p.m. Oct. 22.

Since January, the Center for Michigan has been travelling the state holding community conversations to gather information from Michigan citizens to ensure that policy discussions taking place in Lansing reflect the views of Michigan people. This year the focus is on kindergarten and secondary education. Amber Toth, outreach coordinator for the Center for Michigan, will moderate the event.

Shawn Personke, director of activities and public relations for Silver Maples, is looking forward to the discussion.

“I attended one of the forums this past spring and I found the format and the conversation extremely interesting. They use a push button voting system where you can record your choice on each of the topics. The group then discusses how the group voted as well as how their opinions compare to the rest of the state," she said.

The event is free and open to the public. Organizers are looking for anyone who is interested in the state of education in Michigan: seniors, students, parents and families, and employers. These groups have largely been left out of the high-pitched debates now occurring around education policy.
