Public school lunches are not what they used to be.

School lunch is no longer about tasteless hamburgers and soggy French fries.
Like other districts across the country, the Royal Oak School District has implemented guidelines set by the United States Department of Agriculture that aim to improve the quality of school lunches by increasing their nutritional value.
Here's five things to know about school lunches, according to Mike Jacobs, food service director for Chartwells Dining Services.- Fresh fruits and vegetables (local when available) are used every day at all schools.
- All products in the district are nut free.
- 75 percent of grains offered are whole grain.
- When a meal is purchased (rather than ala carte items), students must chose a fruit or vegetable portion.
- Breakfast is available every day school is in session, even half days, and exam days.
