Clawson Math and Science Scores Up in Merit Exam

The percentage of 11th graders who met or exceeded standards in the Michigan Merit Exam for math and science is up from 2010. But the number of students meeting standards for social studies, reading and writing dropped this year, according to results released this morning by the Michigan Department of Education.

The Michigan Merit Exam is given to 11th graders instead of  the Michigan Education Assessment Program tests.

Fifty-four percent of 11th graders are proficient or advanced in math, up 9 percent from 2010. The statewide percentage for math in 2011 is 52 percent. In the science test, 54 percent of Clawson students met or exceeded goals  compared to 61 percent statewide. 

Clawson students who met standards in social studies, reading and writing  decreased from 2010. Reading dropped from 64 percent to 58 percent this year.

The average composite ACT score improved for Clawson students this year, with a slight jump from 18.6 to 18.9 (out of a possible 36). The statewide average composite ACT score remains steady at 19.3.

“Students are being challenged with greater rigor and are achieving at higher levels,” said state Superintendent of Public Instruction, Mike Flanagan. “Michigan educators are to be commended for the efforts they put in to help more students learn and succeed.”
