11 L’anse Creuse North Students Hurt In Crash

Students hurt in three-car crash on 21 Mile Road Monday morning.

MACOMB COUNTY, MI — Eleven L’anse Creuse High School North students were involved in a serious crash Monday morning near the intersection of 21 Mile Road and Creekside Boulevard in Macomb Township.

Many of the students were taken to area hospitals and three are in “critical but stable condition,” Macomb County Sheriff’s Deputy Renee Yax said in a news release. None of the injuries appear to be life-threatening, she added. Students had just left the school after final exams at about 10:40 a.m., Yax said.

The accident involved three vehicles, according to reports. Five students, ages 15-17, were traveling westbound on 21 Mile Road in a Saturn Ion and stopped at Creekside to turn southbound. A purple Chevy Silverado carrying six students, ages 15-16, rear-ended the Ion, Yax said in the news release.

After being struck, the Ion was pushed into the eastbound lane of 21 Mile Road where it was struck again, this time by a white Chevy Silverado truck. That vehicle was driven by a 64-old man from Macomb Township.

Two of the back seat passengers in the Ion were ejected from the vehicle, according to the news release. It isn’t clear if they were ejected on the initial crash or after being hit by the Macomb Township man’s truck.

Deputies closed 21 Mile Road for several hours after the crash for accident investigation. Yax said the road has been re-opened. The sheriff’s office is continuing its investigation.
