Crime Roundup: Jet's Pizza Driver Beaten with Bat, Woman Cries Wolf on Gun Threat, Heroin Use on Rise

Police Report Guns at Center of Multiple Crimes in Clinton Township This Week

Police responded to four different incidents involving guns this week.

  • A convicted felon was found in possession of two shotguns and a sword, leading to a charge of felon in possession of a firearm.
  • A woman told 911 her boyfriend was threatening her with a gun to speed police response, leading to a charge of providing false information to dispatch with the intention of misleading a police officer.
  • Two 17-year-olds were arrested for carrying a concealed weapo into the AMC Star Gratiot.Β 
  • A Ruger .45 cal BSA 8-shot handgun was reported stolen.Β

  • Two men got away with around $6,500 in Kay Jewelry Oct. 9. Police describe one man as being a black male in his late 30s or early 40s, bald with a goatee, wearing a mustard-colored jacket at the time of the theft. The second man is described as a black male in his 30s, with dread locks and wearing aviator sunglasses and a black jacket at the time of the theft, according to police.
  • A 32-year-old Jet’s Pizza delivery man reported he was beaten with a baseball bat by two masked men near his home on Ormsby.
  • A 46-year-old man with a series of warrants from Detroit was arrested Oct. 8 for domestic violence after he threatened other members of the home in which he was staying with two knives.

In other police news, a Clinton Township dispatcher was fired by the board of trustees for derogatory comments she made about the police department on Facebook and for chronic absenteeism. According to township documents, Shannon Choppa had been disciplined numerous times over the last two years for insubordination, posting derogatory comments about the police department on Facebook, failing to report for duty and absenteeism without leave.

Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham reports heroin use is on the rise among the county's young people. β€œNow you’re going in homes with good family structures, good students, star athletes, and we’re losing a lot of young people there,” Wickersham said. The sheriff's department is reaching out to community agencies and organizations to help put preventative and rehabilitation programs in place, as jail time has not proved to be the solution.

Clinton Township's board of trustees also voted to extend the community's moratorium on medical marijuana businesses for another six months.
