F-35 Could Determine Selfridge Base's Future

Macomb County and state officials are meeting with the Air Force this week to determine if a new fighter jet will be deployed at Selfridge.

MACOMB COUNTY, MI — The future of Selfridge Air National Guard Base may come down to meetings between Air Force officials and a contingent of Michigan politicians this week. Macomb County and Selfridge leaders have been gearing up for the visit, along Gov. Rick Snyder and others, which will help determine if the 100-year-old base will get a share of the new F-35 fighter deployment.

“Selfridge is one of five sites under consideration. Others are Dannelly Field in Montgomery, Ala., Gowen Field in Boise, Idaho, Jacksonville Air National Guard Station in Jacksonville, Fla., and Truax Air National Guard Station in Madison, Wis. Two sites will split the work.
The F35 Lighting II is a fifth-generation fighter jet that will replace the A10 and F16 for the U.S. Air Force, the F/A18 for the U.S. Navy, the F/A18 and AV8B Harrier for the U.S. Marine Corps," the Detroit Free Press reported.
