CLINTON TOWNSHIP, MI — A 52-year-old woman is facing charges after her grandson brought her handgun to a Macomb County high school in May, prompting a lockdown, according to the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office.

Lisa Renee Christy, 52, of Clinton Township, was charged with firearms safe storage violation, which is punishable by up to 93 days behind bars or a fine of up to $500. She was placed in jail with a $100,000 bond.

The incident happened on May 13 at Center Line High School where officials learned the juvenile student pulled out a handgun, prosecutors said.

The high school was thrown into an immediate lockdown and prosecutors said officials quickly located the student and retrieved the gun.

Investigators later determined the student visited Christy's home, who is his grandmother, and found the gun and ammunition in an unlocked room.

He then took the gun without her knowledge and brought it with him to the high school on May 13, prosecutors said.

Two other students also handled the gun inside the high school, prosecutors said.

Officials said failure to properly store the gun is the maximum offense under the law that they can charge Christy with. They noted Christy had no prior record of criminal violations.

"The alleged reckless storage of this handgun by Ms. Christy allegedly enabled her grandson to possess a weapon that could have caused a terrible tragedy," Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido said. "Safe storage of firearms is required by the laws of Michigan, and all responsible gun owners must know they will be held accountable for violations."
