Clean Up Parades Set For Dearborn

From The City of Dearborn: School children have promoted a beautiful Dearborn for 65 years with Clean Up Parades around their schools. This year, the parades are back starting Tuesday, May 9. The parades may have evolved over the years, and the message has continued to expand beyond motivating residents to cut their lawns, pick up litter, and paint their houses. The children now include environmental sustainability messages in each theme and activity.

Sponsored by the City Beautiful Commission, and supported by the City of Dearborn, the Dearborn Public Schools, and parochial and charter schools, the 2017 parades will progress on the following schedule:

• 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 9. Howard, 1611 N. York
• 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 10. Lowrey, 6601 Jonathan
• 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 10. Oakman, 7545 Chase
• 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 22. Haigh, 601 N. Silvery Lane
• 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 24. Geer Park, 14767 Prospect

The City Beautiful Commission also inspires schools to engage in environmentally-friendly educational programs for students as an alternative to hosting a parade. Long Elementary, 3100 Westwood, will do so inside the school on May 23. “Last year, we all collaborated on a very interactive Recycle Fair and we would like to again have a similar event,” says Long Principal Veronica Williams-Jakubus. “Our Recycling Committee will do a brief presentation and each class will rotate through several hands on activities sponsored by The Ecology Center of Ann Arbor during the school day.

“Students and staff all learned so much last year that we would like to expand this year and invite parents to participate as well,” said Williams-Jakubus.
