Dearborn Aims To Cut Thefts From Vehicles
Dearborn Police say 75 percent of thefts from vehicles happens because cars are left unlocked.

DEARBORN, MI — A major dent in thefts from cars can be made if people will just lock their cars at all times. That’s what Dearborn officials believe. Of the city’s nearly 700 larcenies from vehicles each year, about 75 percent are from unlocked vehicles.
With those numbers in mind, Dearborn has launched its “Lock It or Lose It” public awareness campaign. Police Chief Ronald Haddad said crime is down 10 percent in Dearborn overall, but that number can drop even lower with the very simple action of making sure cars are locked.
The basics of the program are simple: first, whenever possible, don’t leave valuables in unattended vehicles. It is highly recommended to remove them from the vehicle or lock them in the trunk. At the very least, do not leave valuables inside a vehicle in clear sight.
Second, always lock unattended vehicles. Finally, residents should quickly notify police of any suspicious activity. Haddad said it is the assistance of residents that allows police to catch most criminals that break into cars.
