Dearborn Fire Officials Urging Residents To Avoid Backyard Campfires

DEARBORN, MI — Dearborn fire officials urged residents Wednesday to avoid burning in their backyards as unprecedented dry conditions persist across metro Detroit.

"Fires spread very quickly in this dry environment, and it’s important to take extra precautions. We have seen an uptick in grass fires, which can be caused by anything from a cigarette butt to a bonfire," Dearborn Fire Chief Joseph Murray said. "If a fire spreads, it’s important to immediately call 911."

Dearborn Fire officials also reminded residents of the City’s ordinance for burning, which requires a container with a lid and a nearby means of extinguishing.

The warning comes after state officials said a private campfire started a wildfire Saturday that scorched over 2,400 acres in the Upper Peninsula. Officials said crews have largely controlled that fire.

Forecasters expect the metro Detroit area could see widespread rainfall this weekend, according to the National Weather Service.
