Dearborn Man Petitions Court for Retrial in Officer Assault Case
Hassan Ibrahim Bazzi was convicted of assault with intent to murder a police officer in 2012.
A Dearborn man serving time for assaulting a police officer is seeking a retrial.
Attorneys for Hassan Ibrahim Bazzi, 40, filed a motion at the Wayne County Circuit Court this week for a new trial and evidentiary hearing arguing that Bazzi suffers from schizophrenia.
Dearborn Police officers arrested Bazzi in 2011 when he allegedly tried to strike a police officer with his vehicle before crashing it near the ACCESS building on Schaefer Road.

According to the Arab American News, the law office of Cyril C. Hall, P.C., who represents Bazzi, claims that Bazzi was not taking his medication on the night of attack, and was not given the opportunity to plead insanity at his trial.
A representative for the law office said he believes that Bazzi had no valid reason to attempt to kill a police officer. Prior to his arrest, Bazzi had no criminal history and was originally being stopped for failing to yield near a fire truck.

Bazzi was sentenced to serve 9 to 20 years for assault with intent to murder, and one count of assaulting, resisting or obstructing a police officer causing injury.
A re-trial hearing is scheduled for May 29 in front of Judge Craig Strong at the Wayne County Circuit Court.
