Volunteers Needed For Dearborn Meals And Wheels Program

DEARBORN, MI — Just a few hours of your time can help Dearborn seniors in need of nutritious meals. Leaders of the Dearborn’s Meals on Wheels program say they are urgently seeking volunteers to assist with both packaging and delivering food to Dearborn residents enrolled in the program.

The Meals on Wheels program is a Wayne County initiative, facilitated in Dearborn by the Senior Services Division. It serves home-bound seniors who do not have access to nutritious meals.
Both permanent and volunteer drivers are needed to deliver food to houses. Volunteers are also needed to help package food in the kitchens at Sisson Manor, 1515 Mason St., and Kennedy Plaza, 5111 Bingham St.

The program runs Monday through Friday. Drivers serving residents in east Dearborn are asked to pick up meals at Kennedy Plaza, while drivers serving residents in west Dearborn pick up meals at Sisson Manor.

Drivers must be 18 years old or older, have a valid driver’s license and pass a background check.

Volunteers may participate as often as their schedule allows. Drivers deliver meals using their own vehicles and are reimbursed for their mileage by Wayne County.

Each route delivers to about 10 seniors and takes about hour to 90 minutes.

Deliveries are made to seniors in homes or senior apartments located within the city of Dearborn. Deliveries are not made outside the city limits.
