DEARBORN — Dearborn Police are investigating claims that a 25-year-old Westland woman stole $21,000 worth of jewelry from her friend while the two women were together on July 5.

According to police reports, a 24-year-old Allen Park woman reported the theft to police after noticing two rings missing from her purse around 3:45 p.m. July 6.

The woman told officers that her purse was in her possession the entire day on July 5 except for a brief period when she left it inside her car with her friend while pumping gas at the BP gas station in the 10000 block of Michigan Avenue.

Police said the woman originally told them that the rings were lost, before quickly stating that she believed that the rings were stolen. The reported items include a gold ring with a large square-like diamond valued at $15,000; and a gold ring with a small square-like diamond valued at $6,000.

The woman told police that the rings were birthday gifts from her fiance, however she was not sure if he still had the receipts.

When police informed the victim that they planned to review the gas station's surveillance tapes to see if anyone else entered the car, she replied: "No, that's OK. The guys who work there know me, and they can tell you I was there."

The case remains under investigation.
