Dearborn police officers are investigating claims that a Walmart employee allegedly stole $152 from a customer's purse while it was left unattended in a shopping cart on July 7.

According to police reports, the customer, a resident of Detroit, told officers she was loading her car with two shopping carts of groceries at the Walmart located at 5851 Mercury Drive around 10 p.m.

While driving home, the woman said she realized that she left her purse in one of the shopping carts in the store's parking lot and promptly came back to retrieve it. After locating an employee pushing shopping carts in the lot, the woman retrieved her purse, cell phone and credit cards, but discovered $152 in cash missing.

According to police, the employee told the woman that she didn't notice a purse in the cart. After informing the store's manager about the incident, store security said they would review surveillance tapes to see if anyone approached the abandoned cart.

The case is closed pending further investigative leads.
