​Veterans Day is coming up and there are several opportunities around metro Detroit to honor those who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces.

Veterans Day is coming up on Tuesday, Nov. 11, with several opportunities around metro Detroit to honor those who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, both in times of war and peace.

Originally called Armistice Day, Veterans Day is always observed on Nov. 11 to reflect the signing of the armistice ending World War I at 11 a.m. on the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. The observance was changed to Veterans Day in 1954 to include veterans who served in World War II and the Korean War.

Here are some upcoming Veterans Day events you shouldn’t miss:

Detroit Historical Museum

The event features the Posting and Retiring of the Colors by Western International High School Cadets, a Veterans Day presentation led by museum educators and Detroit students, and a Veterans Oral History Workshop in partnership with the Reserve Officers Association of Michigan. Nov. 11.

Detroit Veterans Day Parade

The parade features veterans groups, a Motorcycle Brigade, patriotic bands, the Coast Guard and many other organizations. Nov. 9, 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. at 1358 Abbott Street.

Royal Oak Ruck 22 March

A ruck march is a military-style endurance walk done at a brisk pace while carrying weight. In the Armed Forces, participants typically carry at least 45 pounds of gear in their packs. Nov. 8 at Centennial Commons.

Ceremony at Veterans Memorial Pointe, located 1015 S Livernois Rd, Rochester Hills. Nov. 11, 11 a.m. to noon.

Novi Veterans Day Celebration

Novi honors and invites veterans and their guests to enjoy a lunch from Mission BBQ in their honor featuring musical performances by the Geff Phillips and Friends Band. Veterans attend for free.Guests pay $12 Resident / $14 Non-Resident. Nov. 6, 11:30 a.m.
