The shooting happened during a traffic stop, according to police.

DETROIT — An 18-year-old man was shot and injured by an officer Tuesday night in Detroit, according to police.

The shooting happened at 9:40 p.m. at the McDonald's near Seven Mile Road and Gratiot Avenue, according to police.

Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison told reporters that officers with Detroit's gang squad stopped a Chevrolet Malibu for having obstructed license plates in the McDonald's drive-thru.

Bettison said the driver of the Malibu and her passenger got out and allowed officers to search the car. The 18-year-old man, who was in the backseat, refused to exit the car and resisted officers before running away, Bettison said.

As officers quickly chased him, the teen pulled out a handgun and an officer fired one shot that struck the teen in the upper body, Bettison said.

He was taken to a nearby hospital where he was listed in critical condition, Bettison said.

"My sincere prayers go out to this family," Bettison said. "But when you pull a weapon on a Detroit police officer, or any officer, these are the types of things that happen."

Investigators found the handgun at the scene, Bettison said.

The driver of the Malibu and her passenger were cooperating with investigators. No other details about them were released.
