DETROIT — Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf will likely face punishment from the NFL after taking a swipe at a Detroit Lions fan Sunday at Ford Field.

During the second quarter, Metcalf appeared to be arguing with the fan before grabbing him and throwing a jab.

The fan, who identified himself to the Detroit Free Press as Ryan Kennedy, claims he angered Metcalf by calling him by his legal name rather than his common nickname, DK.

"What, my full name isn’t is DeKaylin Zecharius Metcalf," Kennedy told the newspaper. "He doesn’t like his government name. I called him that and then he grabbed me and ripped my shirt. I’m a little shocked. Like everyone’s talking to me. I’m a little rattled, but I just want the Lions to win, baby."

According to NFL Insider Tom Pelissero, Metcalf reported the same fan to team security last season while playing for the Seattle Seahawks. The Lions defeated the Seahawks 42-29 at Ford Field in week four last season.

Moreover, a source close to Metcalf told Pelissero that Kennedy called Metcalf’s mother a derogatory word and then made a racist comment toward Metcalf.

Through a Michigan law firm, Kennedy "categorically denies using the 'N-word,' the 'C-word' or any racial, misogynistic, or hate-based language during the incident."

Metcalf went on to play the rest of Sunday's game, which culminated in a Steelers 29-24 win. He did not speak to reporters after the game. Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin also declined to comment on the situation.

The league is reviewing the incident and could discipline Metcalf as soon as Monday.
