Detroit Boy Mauled While Saving Siblings In Dog Attack

DETROIT — More than $22,000 has been raised for a Detroit boy who was mauled while trying to save his siblings from a dog.

Deacon Ashmore, 12, was playing with his two younger sisters and younger brother when dogs got loose and ran toward the children. Deacon got between the escaping children and the dogs. One of the dogs bit Deacon on the calf, resulting in an injury requiring hospitalization.

"I kinda held off the dogs a bit," Deacon told the Detroit Free Press, which first reported the story.

Since going to the hospital, more than 280 donors have contributed more than $22,000, according to a GoFundMe page created by Clete Bontrager. One anonymous donor contributed $10,000 to the fund.

"Hey Everyone," Bontrager wrote in the GoFundMe description. "Many of you know Deacon Ashmore as a great young man! Deacon proved that Monday evening. His leg was mauled by a dog while playing outside with his siblings. Deacon stepped between the two dogs and his siblings so they could run to the house, but in doing so had his leg badly mangled.

"He had surgery Tuesday morning to repair his calf. Deacon will have medical bills which may include physical therapy. Along with financial help Deacon can use your prayers for his spirits to stay up and his leg heals without complications. Thank you -"

Deacon's surgery fixed tendons, ligaments and muscle that was damaged during the attack. He was released the next day after spending a night in the hospital for observation, according to the Free Press.

Commenters on the GoFundMe page showed support for Deacon by leaving hopeful messages.

"You are such an inspiration, Deacon!," commented Aki James, who donated $20. "Please get well soon."

"This young man is simply heroic," Cynthia Dooley wrote. "It’s an honor to contribute to this fund. Cindy."
