DETROIT — A Detroit man is facing charges in connection with a hit-and-run crash that killed an officer, according to police.

Detroit officer Cameron Richardson, 32, was driving a Jeep north on Hoover Street near Greiner on the city's eastside at 12:09 a.m. last Sunday morning when he was struck by a white van that was trying to turn left at the intersection, according to police.

The Jeep rolled over and Richardson was killed in the crash, according to police.

Officers also found a gun inside the van, according to police.

Officers then arrested 28-year-old Dayjon Antwian Macon in connection with the crash the next day, according to police.

Macon was charged with failure to stop at the scene of an accident when at fault – causing death (15-year felony), failure to stop at the scene of an accident – causing serious impairment or death (5-year felony), moving violation causing death (1-year misdemeanor) and driving while license suspended (93-day misdemeanor).

Macon was placed in jail with a $250,000 bond. His next court date is scheduled for Jan. 17.

"The charged defendant in this case allegedly violated the rules of the road striking police officer Cameron Richardson’s Jeep causing it to roll over, killing him. The evidence will show that in addition to that, he fled the scene. This criminal behavior was cruel and callous,” Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said.

Police described Richardson, who was also a military veteran, as a family man with two daughters.

The family and the police department have set up a GoFundMe page to help support Richardson's daughters.
