Man Charged With Killing 3 In Detroit's LGBTQ Community

Two gay men and a transgendered woman were all killed in Detroit over Memorial Day weekend. Here's what we know about the suspect.

DETROIT, MI — Three members of the LBGTQ Community in Detroit have been murdered and now an 18-year-old man faces charges.

Devon Robinson is facing murder charges in connection with the slayings of three members of Detroit's LGBTQ community over Memorial Day weekend, according to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office. Robinson has been charged with three counts of first-degree murder, two counts of assault with intent to murder and five counts of the use of a firearm in connection with a felony.

Authorities allege that on May 25, Robinson shot and killed Alunte Davis, 21, Paris Cameron, 20, and Timothy Blancher, 20, all of Detroit, inside a home on Devonshire on Detroit's east side.

Davis and Blancher were gay men, and Cameron was a transgender woman. Prosecutors also alleged Robinson shot and wounded two additional victims who have survived their injuries.

Channel 4 reported that Robinson is an ex-boyfriend that was angry over several issues, but that the murders are not believed to have been a hate crime.

"The alleged actions of this defendant are disturbing on so many levels, but the fact that this happened during Pride Month adds salt into the wound," prosecutor Kym Worthy said. "We must remain ever vigilant in our fight to eradicate hate in Wayne County and beyond."

The case was assigned to Special Prosecutor Jaimie Powell Horowitz of the FMJP, which is a collaboration between the Prosecutor’s Office and Fair Michigan Foundation, Inc. FMJP is a program that assists Michigan law enforcement officers and prosecutors in solving serious crimes against lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and transgender individuals.

Fair Michigan President Alanna Maguire added that the case "illustrates the mortal danger faced by members of Detroit’s LGBTQ community, including transgender women of color."

"The LGBTQ community knows that the Fair Michigan Justice Project, the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office and the Detroit Police Department stand ready to aggressively prosecute these brutal crimes.,” she said.
