Google's $17M Expansion To Bring Jobs To Detroit, Ann Arbor

The tech giant said the new jobs will be a "significant" addition.

DETROIT — Google is reportedly investing $17 million into expanding its Detroit and Ann Arbor offices in a move that will bring new jobs to Michigan. Google parent company Alphabet, based in California, said its footprint in both Detroit and Ann Arbor will grow to a total of 210,000 square feet, according to Crain's.

Currently, Google has about 164,000 square feet of office space in the Michigan locations, with about 100 employees in the Detroit office.

Google announced the expansion plan Monday during a Grow with Google event in Taylor, Michigan. More Michigan events are scheduled throughout the week, with stops in Grand Rapids Wednesday and Jackson on Friday, according to Crain's.

"We see the value of being in southeast Michigan; that's why we've been here for over 13 years," Google CFO Ruth Porat said in a statement.

The company did not say exactly how many new jobs will come to Detroit and Ann Arbor, but said the addition will be "significant," according to the Detroit Free Press.

The expansion at the Detroit office next to Little Caesars Arena is expected be completed in 2020 and the Ann Arbor expansion has an anticipated completion date of 2021.
