June Coronavirus Numbers In Michigan Down Compared To May

Michigan has seen a significantly lower number of coronavirus cases reported over the past 10 days compared to the first 10 days of May.

MICHIGAN — The state has seen a significantly lower number of coronavirus cases reported over the past 10 days than it did during the first 10 days of May despite an emphasis put on expanded testing, according to data provided by Michigan health officials.

Michigan on Wednesday took another step toward reopening, as an assortment of businesses were allowed to open their doors. Gyms, movie theaters, indoor climbing facilities, bowling alleys, outdoor concert venues, night clubs and race tracks are now able to open across the entire state.

Meanwhile, Northern Michigan advanced to Phase 5 of of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's MI Safe Start plan for reopening the state's economy. The advancement allows for barbershops to open in the Upper Peninsula and in the greater Traverse City area Wednesday. Those same businesses can open across the rest of the state beginning Monday.

Whitmer has repeatedly said that the state would use data to guide them in deciding when businesses would be able to reopen. Despite over 59,000 total cases of the coronavirus being reported as of Wednesday, the number of cases reported over the past 10 days is down significantly compared to a month ago, state data shows.

The state, which reported 171 new cases of the coronavirus and 13 new deaths Wednesday, has averaged 188 new cases of the coronavirus and lust under 22 new deaths over the past 10 days.

That 10-day stretch includes a high water mark of 304 cases reported on June 3. The fewest number of new cases reported during the 10-day period came Tuesday, when 108 cases were reported.

Comparing those numbers to the same data range a month prior shows the sort of improvement that has allowed state officials to begin reopening portions of the state.

During the first 10 days of May, Michigan recorded 5,759 confirmed cases of the coronavirus and 762 deaths attributed to the virus, according to state health officials.

Michigan averaged nearly 576 new cases each day during that time period to go along with just over 76 new deaths a day. It reported as many as 977 (May 1) cases during a single day, and as many as 154 deaths (May 2).
