Metro Detroit Wintry Mix Saturday: Timelime, Breakdown

METRO DETROIT — A wintry weather system is expected to bring rain and snow to the metro Detroit area Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.

Forecasters expect rain to move into the Detroit area sometime overnight around 2 a.m. when a southern wind will help push temperatures into the 30s.

The rain will then start shifting into snow sometime by daybreak across most of the area, according to forecasters.

Areas north of Interstate 94 will see the best chance for the transition to snow, especially farther north, while areas south of Interstate 94 will likely continue to see rain, according to forecasters.

The precipitation will likely be all snow by the late morning hours when temperatures start falling across the entire Detroit area, according to forecasters.

Scattered snow showers will hang around Saturday through the afternoon hours, according to forecasters.

By Saturday night, most areas across the region should have roughly 1 inch of fresh snow, though some communities farther north can see up to 2 inches, according to forecasters.

Colder air then moves into the region Sunday, keeping highs in the teens and lows near zero degrees, according to the weather service.

It will get even colder from there, as morning lows will drop below zero degrees with wind chills falling 15 to 25 degrees below zero Monday through Wednesday, according to the weather service.

Highs will be in single digits Monday and Tuesday with wind chill readings below zero degrees throughout the day, according to the weather service.
