That trend follows what has been evident in Michigan for the past several weeks. The state has seen an uptick in new cases, but the number of coronavirus deaths has decreased.

In 10 days ranging from the end of May to the beginning portion of June, the state averaged about 150 more cases than during the same 10-day range at the end of June to the beginning of July. Meanwhile, the state has seen a drop of about 262 deaths attributed to the virus during that time range.

As of Friday, over 52,800 people in Michigan have contracted and recovered from the coronavirus, according state data.

Outside Michigan, coronavirus cases continue to surge in southern states, and hospitals in states such as Texas are beginning to near capacity. The New York Times reported that the U.S. has had its three largest daily case reports during the first five days of July.

Thirty-seven states have reported increases in coronavirus cases over the past week, according to Johns Hopkins University. The number of confirmed U.S. cases neared 2.9 million Monday morning.

There have been 11.6 million cases of the coronavirus reported worldwide, according to the World Health Organization. Of those, more than 538,000 people have died. Nearly 6.6 million people have recovered from the virus.
