Michigan Nears 54,000 Coronavirus Cases
Michigan on Friday reported 403 new cases of the coronavirus, bringing the statewide total to 53,913. It also announced 29 new deaths.
MICHIGAN — The state is closing in on 54,000 total coronavirus cases following the most recent update from state health officials.
Michigan on Friday reported 403 new cases of the coronavirus, bringing the statewide total to 53,913. The state also announced another 29 deaths related to the virus, bringing Michigan's death toll to 5,158.
State numbers are released daily at 3 p.m. but are indicative of what has been reported by 10 a.m. that day.

Numbers are sometimes altered as public health officials investigate individual cases. Case numbers sometimes do not match numbers provided by respective counties due to several variables, including testing done by private organizations that report to either the state or the county but not both.

Deaths are reported by health care providers and recorded by local health departments. Other data, such as the number of individuals who have recovered at the state level, are released on Saturdays.
Michigan Coronavirus Trends
Across the state, the number of new coronavirus cases reported daily are lower than they once were as the state continues to see a plateau in its cases.
The same holds true for Oakland County and Wayne County.
The number of new cases reported in Oakland County from May 12-21 is significantly lower than the number of new cases reported from April 12-21.
Oakland County reported 928 cases of the coronavirus over the last 10 days. That's an average of 92.8 a day. Meanwhile, the county reported 48 deaths during that time, an average of nearly five deaths a day.
There were 1,318 coronavirus cases reported in Oakland County from April 12-21. That is nearly 132 new cases a day. The county reported 242 deaths during that time, an average of over 24 a day.
The same holds true in Wayne County, where as a whole, the county reported 657 new cases over the last 10 days, an average of 65.7 new cases a day. The county reported 102 new deaths over the last 10 days, an average of 10.2 new deaths a day.
From April 12-21, Wayne County reported 2,025 new cases. That's over 202 new cases a day, on average. Meanwhile, the county reported 274 new deaths in that data range, an average of 27.4 a day.

Coronavirus Cases in Southeast Michigan
Southeast Michigan, and in particular Detroit, have been hit hard by the coronavirus. Below is a breakdown of where the majority of cases have been reported.
While Detroit leads the state in both cases and deaths, Wayne County ranks the highest among Michigan counties in both categories. Oakland County is close behind.

Michigan in National, Global Context
More than 5.2 million cases of the coronavirus have been reported across the globe as of Friday morning, according to the World Health Organization. Of those, more than 337,000 people have died. However, the organization has reported that 2.1 million people have recovered from the virus.
The U.S., with it's 1.6 million reported cases of the coronavirus and nearly 97,000 deaths attributed to the virus, leads the world in both categories.
Michigan ranks seventh in the U.S. in total number of confirmed coronavirus cases, according to the World Health Organization. Michigan is fourth in the country in deaths attributed to the virus.
