Michigan Reports Fewest Coronavirus Cases, Deaths Since March

Overall, more than 60,000 cases of the coronavirus have been confirmed in Michigan. Over 44,000 people have recovered from the virus.

MICHIGAN — More than 60,000 cases of the coronavirus have been confirmed in Michigan as of Monday. Meanwhile, state health officials said more than 44,000 people have recovered since contracting the virus.

On Monday, Michigan health officials reported 74 new cases of the coronavirus and two new deaths attributed to the virus. The updates bring statewide total to 60,064 and 5,772, respectively.

However, the state on Saturday released its most recent cumulative number for people who have recovered from the virus. As of this weekend, Michigan health officials reported 44,464 people had contracted the coronavirus and recovered.

Meanwhile, the state's two new deaths reported Monday were the fewest Michigan has seen since March 22. Likewise, Monday marked the first time since March the state reported fewer than 100 new cases of the coronavirus in a single day.

The numbers point to more optimism in the state, which once ranked as high as third in the U.S. in deaths attributed to the coronavirus. Currently, Michigan has the sixth most coronavirus deaths in the nation.

Monday also marked the day Michigan allowed barbershops and salons to open across the entire state, after originally allowing such businesses to open in the Upper Peninsula and the Greater Traverse City region on June 10.

Last week, restrictions on restaurants were lessened to allow them to serve dine-in customers. Gob. Gretchen Whitmer also removed a ban on camps in another step toward a full state reopening.
