The new numbers bring the total number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Michigan to 61,630.
MICHIGAN — Michigan saw an uptick of 211 coronavirus cases and 11 new deaths attributed to the virus, according to the most recent data released by state health officials Tuesday.
The new numbers bring the total number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Michigan to 61,630. The state has a total of 5,864 deaths following Tuesday's update.
The numbers continue to be cause for some optimism. As a state, Michigan has reported fewer than 300 new cases every day since May 26. The state hasn't reported more than 20 new deaths since early June.

Coronavirus cases have been slowly declining in Michigan, a state that once ranked as high as third in the country in both total number of cases and total number of deaths. As of Tuesday, the state ranks ninth and sixth in the nation in cases and deaths, respectively, according to numbers provided by the World Health Organization.

The progress has allowed officials to relax restriction put in place during the beginning of the coronavirus crisis. Last week, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said schools, which have been closed to in-person classes due to the virus, would be able to reopen to face-to-face instruction in the fall.
The University of Michigan on Monday announced it would be allowing some in-person instruction during its Fall Semester. The school followed the announcement up on Tuesday by saying it would not host a 2020 Presidential Election debate due to concerns surrounding bringing people to the campus amid the coronavirus pandemic.
