Moroun Family Wins Approval For New Bridge

Canadian authorities recently issued a permit for the bridge, which would be built next to the Ambassador Bridge.

DETROIT, MI — When the Gordie Howe International Bridge opens in 2023 linking the United States to Canada, it’s likely to have brand new competitor just a few miles away from familiar faces around Detroit. The Moroun family, owners of the 1929-built Ambassador Bridge, recently won approval from Canadian authorities to build a new span, according to a Detroit Free Press report.

Despite the approval, Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder said the bridge isn’t a done deal. The new span must first get approval on the U.S. side, he said.

"Construction on a replacement span would not begin unless and until further governmental approvals in the U.S. are obtained and several conditions established by Canada are met," Snyder said in a statement.
“The Government of Canada recognizes the importance of ensuring the continued flow of trade and travelers between Windsor and Detroit, one of the most important Canada-United States border crossings," Canadian Transport Minister Marc Garneau said in a statement. "The construction of the replacement Ambassador Bridge, together with the Gordie Howe International Bridge project, will ensure that Canadians continue to benefit from the efficient movement of people and goods at this crossing while providing infrastructure improvements for the local community.”
