DETROIT — A section of the Detroit Riverwalk will be closed through the winter for utility improvements.

Crews will close the Riverwalk between Beaubien and Rivard streets on Thursday, Nov. 20, so they can begin a new storm sewer project along Schweizer Place.

The project is expected to last through the winter. The Riverwalk should reopen sometime in spring 2026.

Pedestrians and cyclists will be detoured to Atwater Street until mid-December. They'll then have to use Franklin Street until the Riverwalk reopens.

Road officials said the new storm sewer will provide lasting environmental benefits for residents and businesses along the Interstate 375 corridor and the riverfront. It will also support cleaner water being discharged into the Detroit River.
