These Wayne Co. Schools Have Reported New Coronavirus Outbreaks

WAYNE COUNTY, MI — Four Wayne County schools are among 27 Michigan schools that have reported a new coronavirus outbreak, according to data released by the state Monday.

Chapman Elementary School in Rockwood, University Liggett School in Grosse Pointe Woods, Shumate Middle School in Gibraltar and Carlson High School in Rockwood have all reported new outbreaks of the coronavirus, according to the data.

Outbreaks reported last week at three Wayne County schools remain ongoing, according to the state.

The state reported that two staff members at Salina Intermediate School in Dearborn had tested positive for the coronavirus as of Sept. 21. A combination of six staff and students had tested positive for the coronavirus at Divine Child High School as of Sept. 21, according to the state. Also last week, 14 students had reported as positive for COVID-19 at Madonna University in Livonia.

Each of those outbreaks is listed as ongoing, according to the state.

Twenty-seven new outbreaks of the coronavirus have been reported in schools across Michigan, state health officials reported Monday. The largest of those outbreaks was at Michigan Tech in Houghton, where eight new cases were reported among students.

Last week, the state reported new outbreaks at 14 schools across Michigan.

It's important to note that a coronavirus outbreak is different than a case. A COVID-19 outbreak is defined as two or more cases with a link by place and time indicating a shared exposure outside of a household.

The information provided by the state on Monday includes K-12, college and university school name, address, number of cases and if the cases involved staff, students or both. Students or staff exposed to COVID-19 outside the school building and are not thought to have spread the virus in the school due to quarantine or self-isolation are not included in the data.

Many factors, including the lack of ability to conduct effective contact tracing in certain settings, may result in underreporting of outbreaks, MDHHS said. This information does not provide a complete picture of school outbreaks in Michigan and the absence of identified outbreaks in a school does not mean it is not experiencing an outbreak.
