Toledo Man Arraigned In Egypt Covington Murder Case: MSP

Three people have now been charged with murder in the 2017 Wayne County homicide.

WAYNE COUNTY, MI — A Toledo man has been charged with murder in connection with the killing of Egypt Covington, who was found shot and killed in her Van Buren Township home in June 2017.

Shandon Ray Groom, 28, was arraigned Thursday in 34th District Court on one count of felony murder and one count of first-degree home invasion, according to Michigan State Police. He was remanded to the Wayne County Jail, and the murder investigation is still underway, police said.

Groom is the third person to be charged in connection with the case.

On Dec. 18, 31-year-old Shane Lamar Evans, of Sumpter Township, was also charged with murder and home invasion felonies.

Another Toledo man, 34-year-old Timothy Eugene Moore, was also arraigned on murder and home invasion charges in November.

Covington, a 27-year-old singer, was found shot and killed in her Van Buren Township home in June 2017, according to reports about the case.

Michigan State Police got involved in the case at the family's behest and began assisting Van Buren Township police.

On Nov. 5, police said two people — one of them Moore — had been arrested in connection with Covington's murder.

Police at the time said detectives from the Michigan State Police 2nd District Special Investigation Section made the arrests but did not release additional information.

"We realize that we have not discussed this investigation in public," officials said in a statement at the time. "This investigation has a lot of moving parts and our ultimate goal is to make sure we get every fact possible to bring justice for Egypt."

Two days later, authorities said a second person who was arrested had been released from police custody pending further investigation.

"The second person arrested by Special Investigation Detectives has been released pending further investigation," Michigan State Police officials said in a statement posted to Twitter. "This investigation continues to change rapidly and detectives are continuing to follow up on leads generated from evidence in the case."
